Voter suppression bills SB 303 and 304 are coming back to the Michigan Senate for a final vote on Wednesday, June 30th the last day before Senators take their long August recess. Please call your State Senator TODAY and urge him/her to vote NO and SB 303 and 304. These bill were adopted in the Senate, then adopted with amendments in the House and now return for a final vote in the Michigan Senate.
SB 303 and SB 304 are the most restrictive voter ID bills in the nation:
- The bills ban voters who arrive at the polls without a specific type of Voter ID to confirm their identify by signing a sworn affidavit, a policy that has worked well for decades. Under the new rules, voters would have to complete a “provisional” ballot that wouldn’t be counted unless the voter presents an ID at the local clerk’s office within six days;
- Poll workers would be required to compare EVERY voter’s signature, even those who have a proper ID, with signatures in a Qualified Voter File (QVF). If the poll workers don’t feel the voter’s signature matches one in the QVF, that person would be required use a provisional ballot which will not count unless further ID is provided after the election. A problem with this new strict rule: signatures of voters, especially older persons, college students and persons with disabilities, often change over time.
- Also, these bills introduce an opportunity for partisan poll challengers to influence who is allowed to cast their ballot. When a voter’s signature is rejected at the polls, citizens must file a provisional ballot that will NOT be counted unless an ID can be presented to the voter’s clerk within six days.

Michigan voters turned out in historic numbers in the 2020 election, one of the state’s most secure elections. A recent six month Republican study, released on June 23rd, debunked the former President’s “big lie” that there was widespread voter fraud in Michigan’s 2020 election. No matter what we look like or where we come from, all Michiganders want our voices to be heard in our democracy and our voting rights protected.
