The U.S. Supreme Court Overturns Roe v. Wade

It’s Time to Fight Back!

The U.S. Supreme Court court today overturned Roe v. Wade, the historic 1973 court case that has protected women’s right to have an abortion, for almost 50 years.

Michigan Unitarian Universalist Social Justice Network (MUUSJN), its Interfaith Reproductive Justice Coalition and many other allies are taking actions that we want you to know about:

  1. This morning, an amicus brief, launched by MUUSJN, Jews for a Secular Democracy and by Inclusive Justice — at the request of Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s attorney — was extended to support the legal actions of both Planned Parenthood of Michigan and Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s lawsuits against a 1931 law that makes abortion a felony, could go into effect when Roe v. Wade is overturned. Our brief documents that a majority of people from various religious denominations believe that that abortion should be legal all or most of the time. Also, our brief say that denying access to an abortion, based on right wing religious views, discriminates against other people of faith who believe otherwise. This violates separation of church that is guaranteed in the U.S. Constitution. We are inviting faith leaders to express their interest in become signatories on our brief. For more information and to sign up to be a signatory on the brief, click HERE
  2. MUUSJN is working hard to collect signatures to put a Reproductive Freedom for All proposal on the 2022 ballot. There are only 8 days left to collect signatures. Click HERE to sign up to get petitions and know where to turn them in. MUUSJN is partnering with Fems for Democracy on this.
  3. Click HERE to join our UU denomination on a national letter writing day on Saturday, June 25th. Michigan will be one of the states that will benefit from this national GOTV action.
  4. Here’s a face to face Repro Justice event being held this Saturday June 25 at 1 p.m. at the UAW Local 600, 10550 Dix Ave., Dearborn. Featured speakers will include: Attorney General Dana Nessell; Danielle Atkinson, Mothering Justice; Nicole Wells Stallworth, Planned Parenthood of MI; and former Michigan Supreme Court justice Marilyn Kelly.

For more information on collecting signatures and on reproductive justice events, call MUUSJN’s Nomi Joyrich at 248-497-1226.
