Equality Act Adopted in U. S. House!
Senate Vote Coming–Act Now!
On Thursday February 25, the U. S. House of Representatives adopted the Equality Act (H.R. 5) on a vote of 224-206, including three Republicans. However, passage in the Senate faces an uphill battle. The Senate needs 60 votes to overcome a filibuster. This is separate from other state legislative efforts to amend the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act to protect rights of people based on their sexual orientation or gender identify.
Call or email your U. S. Senators
Take action this week by contacting your Senators by email or phone to support passage of The Equality Act. Senators Gary Peters and Debbie Stabenow supported the Equality Act last year. Thank them, in advance, for their support. Ask your family and friends in other states to contact their Senators as well. Just a few clicks will get it done.
OTHER THINGS YOU CAN DO
- If you are a minister or a faith leader, add your name to the growing list of faith-based people and organizations that support this legislation.
- Post the attached and/or linked graphics on your Web site and/or Facebook pages to indicate your support: Equality Act Clipart
- Attend a workshop to learn more about talking to your legislators about LGBTQ+ rights, on Monday, March 8th at 3pm EST.Click Here to Register for the “Script, Schedule and Speak” Training
- State AND federal legislators will be on break from March 26 β April 12. This is a good time to request a meeting with them at their local offices or via Zoom, to discuss your support for state and federal legislation and ask for their vote. MUUSJN is planning to hold additional training on talking to legislators, so watch your email βinβ box for announcements!
