Democratic Presidential candidates will debate in Detroit on July 30th and 31st. This is an opportunity for Michiganders to express their views at public events and learn more about where the candidates stand on issues.  This email provides information about both these opportunities. Help Shut Down Detention Center for Immigrant Kids Separated from Families

BACKGROUND The American Friends Service Committee, along with social justice and faith partner organizations (including the National Immigrant Justice Center, United We Dream, the Franciscan Action Network, Sojourners, the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, the Unitarian Universalist Association, the UU Service Committee) has been collaborating to demand that the Homestead Detention Center near Miami, Florida be shut down.  They have declared that the week of June 9 – 16 be a time of focused action to demand that Congress and the Secretary of Health and Human Services shut down the Center and expedite efforts to reunite youth with their families or sponsors. Tell Your Rep To Override Trump’s Veto — An Attack on Democracy

Tell Your Representative to Vote to OVERRIDE  Trump’s Veto BACKGROUND On February 15th, President Donald Trump declared a “national emergency” to allow himself to grab billions of dollars already appropriated by Congress to build his unpopular wall between the U.S. and Mexico.  More than two-thirds of Americans don’t think the wall should be a priority.  On February 26th the House passed a joint resolution to terminate the national emergency by a vote of 245 to 182. On March 14th, the Senate also passed it (59- 41) with 12 Republicans voting with Democrats.
