Urge Rep’s Slotkin and Stevens to Support The American Women’s Protection Act

By MUUSJN on Saturday, August 7th, 2021

Call & Urge Rep’s Elissa Slotkin & Haley Stevens To Co-sponsor the Women’s Health Protection Act (HR 3755)

Rep. Elissa Slotkin: 1-202-225-4872

Rep. Haley Stevens: 202-225-8171

BACKGROUND

The legal right to an abortion faces its biggest threat in decades, according to NARAL Prochoice America. In June, Rep. Judy Chu (D-CA) and 188 U.S. Representatives co-sponsored the Women’s Health Protection Act (HR 3755) a bill that would block a barrage of state bans and restrictions on women’s access to an abortion. According to the Guttmacher Institute, 561 abortion bans have been adopted since January of 2021. The Women’s Health Protection Act is needed to protect women’s right to make decisions about their own reproductive health care.

HR 3755 is co-sponsored by every Michigan Democratic U.S. Representative except for two: Rep. Elissa Slotkin and Rep. Haley Stevens. Please urge these two Michigan Representatives to join their colleagues to put a stop to many bans and medically unnecessary restrictions. This bill has been introduced in the Senate as S. 1875 and is co-sponsored by 48 Senators, including Michigan Senators Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters.

During July, MUUSJN’s Interfaith Reproductive Justice Coalition voted to support and advocate for the Women’s Health Protection Act that would protect women from restrictions such as:

  1. Requiring a mandatory ultrasound and other medically unnecessary tests;
  2. Requiring a health provider to provide biased abortion counseling;
  3. Requiring fetal remains burials;
  4. Limiting health care providers ability to provide abortion services via telemedicine;
  5. Requiring persons seeking an abortion to make one or more additional health visits;
  6. Limiting a health care provider from providing immediate abortion services when this procedure would be needed to protect the life of the patient; and
  7. Requiring persons seeking an abortion prior to fetal viability to state their reasons for this procedure, which could then be used to deny access to an abortion.
  8. AND THERE ARE MORE!

Tell U.S. Representatives Slotkin and Stevens:

  1. Women must have freedom to make decisions about their own reproductive health;
  2. The Guttmacher Institute reports that 561 abortion bans have been adopted since January 2021;
  3. The Women’s Health Protection Act (H.R. 3755) is needed to protect women’s free choice about their health care against these attacks; and
  4. I urge you to become a co-sponsor of H.R. 3755.

 Thank you for taking action!
