SB 303 and SB 304 requires a state ID in order to vote in person on election day. It removes the option to simply sign an affidavit if you don’t have or forgot a suitable ID. The affidavit system has worked for decades in Michigan.

SB 285 requires voters to submit copies of voter ID information when applying for an absentee ballot application. Not all people can easily make copies of their ID. A voters’ signature has long been considered a reliable way to identify a voter.

Elected officials should be seeking ways to encourage more voters, not inventing excuses to deny voters the ability to cast their ballots. Photo ID requirements present substantial barriers to voting and negatively affect voter participation, with no proven security benefit.

Michigan voters turned out in historic numbers in the 2020 election. It has been considered one of the state’s most secure elections. No matter what we look like or where we come from, all Michiganders want our voices to be heard in our democracy and our voting rights protected.
